Making the Simple Animation Model

Make your Anime PVC uncomplicated, simple and bold. Use primary colours. You don't need a lot of details and so forth.

You only need two or three facial features to animate. Any more than that it becomes complex and expressions will be hard to emote to the viewer. Think of Gromit for example. He does not speak and most of his emotions are expressed using his eyes, eyebrows and ears.

You only need a few body features to animate. For example arms, legs and head. Although many stop motion characters may merge the head and body into one for example and have no legs or arms at all.

Ensure the features are easily seen by the viewer. Make them big and bold. See the fantastic Aardman "Purple and Brown" characters. Notice how basic they are ..with bold features..no arms / legs yet full of life.

Watch those legs or supports as the model you make has to able to stand up on its own.

Although it is a difficult discipline do create a storyboard of some kind. It does not have to be complicated or well drawn. Scribble it on a piece of paper if needed.

The storyboard can act as a bullet point record of the events that take place in your stop motion animation.

Estimate the length of time (in seconds ) for the various events in your animation.

You can sketch on your storyboard images for the various events. Stick prepainted kit are fine..you do not have to be a good artist.

Filming your animated Movie

Choose your favourite stop motion animation software, sometimes called 'frame grabbing' software

If you are using a camcorder via Firewire its best to ensure the camera is connected to the power supply and the tape removed the tape. If you are using a Web camera make sure you have the driver software installed before filming.

Frame capture Advice

You can get very good results with 15 frames per second. If you really want smooth results than you can try 20 frames per second.

Capture 12 to 15 frames when introducing or opening a scene before your characters animate or move. This is sometimes called setting the scene. But also remember 15 frames is only 1 second at 15 fps. So it will pass very quickly.

Its normal to capture one frame per movement but you can experiment with two frames if you wish.

A pause usually lasts a half a second ..so that means seven to eight frames for example between garage kit characters talking back and forth to each other.

When you want to make your character blink just take 3 frames with the eye closed (at 15 fps )

To finish out a scene take twelve to fifteen frames

J Art - Japanese Pop Art

What is Pop art? Pop art as a movement started in the 1950s in Britain and the U.S. which takes its art from popular mass culture as opposed to the elite art world. Today the term can still be used for anime stuff as an expression influenced from the mainstream culture of the masses.

While Andy Warhol was making his Soup Cans famous in the U.S., a new and exciting art in Japan was starting to form and take on a course of its own.

Tanaami and American Influences

One of the first and most important of the Japanese pop artists is Keiichi Tanaami. He was educated at the Musashino Art University, and would take a designer job after graduation. It wasn't long before he left the company he worked for due to his busy schedule with outside activities. These creative activities included experimentations with animation, lithograph, illustration, and editorial design.

By the late 60s, Tanaami traveled to the United States where he had an influential meeting with Andy Warhol in his legendary Factory in New York. He was very happy to have met Andy while he was doing his silkscreens, and much of his work was inspired by Andy's style. Later, after moving to San Fransisco, the Japanese artist's work became very colorful and psychedelic. He even designed a cover for Jefferson Airplane.

Much of Tanaami's Anime PVC comes from dreams and memories. He remembers as a child squeezing goldfish that were about to die, until their guts came out. You can see this in some of his goldfish sculptures. Gruesome and interesting stuff.

Manga and Anime

Perhaps the best known contemporary Japanese artist today is Takashi Murakami. He is attributed with the modern art style known as "superflat," for a blending of traditional art with newer concepts deriving, in part, from manga and anime. These artworks are known for their flat planes of colorful images.

While Andy Warhol in the 1960s was turning consumer products into art, Murakami is now turning art into consumer products. He says he knows how much the Japanese people love art, but very few can afford the upper class art. So he creates affordable art anybody can afford. His art comes in the form of toys, paintings, sculptures, dolls, and mannequins, T-shirts, videos, and any other type of pvc figure anime readily available for consumers. He also designed a Louis Vuitton handbag.

His art is often colorful and imaginative, such as the painting entitled "727." Some of his art is daring, such as his "My Lonesome Cowboy." The "Cowboy" shows an obvious reference to American culture with the lasso made from the, uh, fluids.

What Anime is and is Not

Anime is, simply put, animation figures model that's made in Japan. I'll give you some examples of anime that you might know. Speed Racer, Hello Kitty, Pokemon, RoboTech, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and a lot of the cartoons you find on Cartoon Network qualify as well, particularly Adult Swim.

Thankfully our country has gotten the rights to translate the stories from Japanese to English, because the storylines in anime are really good. Often they're better than what Hollywood shovels into your brain.

That's basically what anime is. Now let's talk about what it's not.

Anime is not a genre; it's an art form; a medium. From now on I want you to think of anime as being equated with movies, books, music, etc; all the entertainment media. Just like you have movies for kids, movies for teens, adults, so it is with anime.

All your entertainment comes in 31 flavors, right? Comedy, horror, drama, suspense, action, etc. You file similar movies on the same shelf in the store, don't you? But you shouldn't be putting all anime on the same shelf because anime is not a genre. It's a medium, like movies are a medium, like books are a medium. A medium can have any genre of entertainment in it; well so can anime. prepainted kit is not all sex and violence as some people will tell you. When I hear someone say that anime is sex and violence, that immediately tells me that they watched probably one particular anime show that had that and then they go "Oh well that's how it all is."

Now granted, some anime has that. Just like some movies have that. Just like some books have that. Does that make all books bad? No. So why should it for anime? Again, anime is an art form, not a genre. Anime can have comedy, it can have horror, drama, suspense, action, hey it can even have porn or blood-and-gut, but that doesn't mean it all has it! I'm not going to lie to you and say that anime is all happy goodness and none of it has anything you don't want to see. There is good stuff, and there is bad stuff, and there is everything in between, just like any other form of entertainment. If somebody came up to you and said "Hey man, we should really be censoring these 'movies' that people are talking about. They're all sex and violence. I mean every movie has that in it, and I don't think we should let our kids be watching movies." Would you believe that? No, you'd go "Excuse me, but that doesn't apply to all movies leave me alone."

You've got a rating system in the movies, right? G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17. Anyway, think about the movies. Just because Lord of the Rings was PG-13, did that mean it was necessarily bad for kids to watch? That's opinionated. Okay, think of a movie you like but your kids don't like it because they don't understand it. The themes are over their heads and they don't go for all that characterization. In our movie rating system what would we rate a movie like that? garage kit doesn't have anything the kids shouldn't be seeing, it's just that they don't understand. What do you think MPAA would rate it?
